VERJUICE (literally "green juice") is juice sqeezed from sour grapes or crab apples, used in medieval times as a souring agent, much as lemon juice is today.

VERJUS = VERJUICE.

Viola odorata = VIOLET.

VIOLET = Viola odorata. The flowers are used in conserves and syrups. Candied Violets (Comfits and Sweets) are used to decorate cakes and confectionery.
