0510 ORANGE BLOSSOM WATER CONCENTRATE 1:39
| 25 ml | 6.50 |
These waters are used both in cookery, especially eastern recipes, and in perfumery. To prepare for use mix one part concentrate with 39 parts water - so this little bottle will make you a litre (roughly a quart) of rose or orange blossom water. Or just use drops where the recipe calls for teaspoons. A few drops gives a lovely scent to the finger bowls at feasts. (Shipping weight 80 g each.)

0720 ORRIS ROOT - powdered
As well as having its own violet scent, orris root is a fixative - that is, it may be used in perfumery to keep the essential oils from evaporating too rapidly. For potpourri, generally use a tablespoon of orris to five cups of flower petals. It is also used in the making of cloved orange pomanders.

The Gifts of the Magi: Everyone has heard of frankincense and myrrh, the gifts of the Three Wise Men, but how many people actually know what they were? Here is your opportunity to both see and smell these most treasured incenses, in the past among the most precious of goods.
0750 FRANKINCENSE GUM -pea sized tears
This celebrated incense is a resin exuded from a shrub grown only on the southern tip of Arabia and the adjacent coast of Africa. What you want from this is the fragrant smoke, best made by smoldering the resin on glowing charcoal or hot metal. One lady we know sprinkles it on top of her old wood-fired kitchen stove, and thus fills her house with the rich balsamic odour.

0755 INDIAN OLIBANUM (Salai Gum)
This soft gum-resin, golden-yellow in colur, burns with an agreeable odour similar to, though slightly more 'turpentiny', than frankincense. Much used in India as an incense.

| 500 g | 24.20 |
0760 MYRRH GUM - granules
Another gum resin, brought from the same area as frankincense, myrrh was burnt as incense and also widely used in perfumery. Women of ancient Israel customarily wore, next to their skin like a locket, a small linen bag of myrrh and other fragrant substances. The warmth of the body would gradually release the scent, thus providing a long-lasting fragrance.

0765 BDELLIUM (Guggal Gum)
A greenish-yellow gum, with a balsamic odour somewhat like cedarwood. Originating from central and northern India, where it is used as medicine and incense, it is mentioned in the Sanskrit literature as early as the 7th century B.C. The Romans imported it; it appears in the Old Testament; and it was exported to China from the 4th to 9th centuries under the name of 'Arsacid aromatic'.

| 500 g | 25.85 |
0770 GUM BENZOIN
Another fragrant resin. The word is often spelled 'benjamin' in old sources. A popular medieval recipe for 'burning perfume' called for 1 part myrrh to 5 parts frankincense to 2½ parts benzoin.
| 25 g | 2.05 |
| 500 g | 27.45 |
0775 DRAGON'S BLOOD
This red resin, from a rattan palm of Indonesia, is used in medicine, incense, pigments, painting on glass, and varnishes. Since the 16th century it has largely replaced the older Socotra Dragon's Blood, which is now unavailable.

| 500 g | 93.50 |
0780 CHARCOAL BRIQUETTES
Specially treated to light easily, these long-lasting briquettes let you get the best out of your incense. Burn frankincense and myrrh, or experiment with other materials. Many spices and herbs give beautiful scents when burnt. The briquettes may be broken into smaller pieces. (NB - Do not hold in hand when lighting, as these ignite fast!) (Shipping weight 15 g each.)
