One of the difficulties of using recipes from other places or other times is that often the ingredients have strange names. Sometimes the same ingredient is known by different names in different areas or eras. To help the adventurous spicecook, here at Francesco Sirene, Spicer we have compiled an index of alternate names for spices and herbs, including historical variations, names in languages other than English, and the scientific Latin names. Sources used.
Please note that we have included information on some spices and herbs which we do not yet carry at Francesco Sirene, Spicer. We are actively working on expanding our selection to include even more rare and exotic spices and herbs, but there are some for which we have not yet found suppliers.
We're still working on this list. By the nature of it, a list like this is never finished. If you have additions to offer, or a question about a name you have met which is not on the list, please write us at jhanna@silk.net.
KEY: Names in scientific Latin will appear in italics: Nigella sativa. Alternate names will appear in capitals: BLACK CARAWAY. And the main name, under which Francesco Sirene, Spicer stocks the spice, will appear in bold type, followed by the section of the catalogue in which it appears: Nigella Seed (Spices).
