Edward Frank HAZLEWOOD 1910 - 1989British Home Child Emigrating to Canada
|
|
Edward remained in the care of the Foundling Hospital until the day he sailed to Canada. On that day, September 18, 1924, at 14 years of age, he was given into the care of Barnardo's Homes for the purpose of emigration. Barnardo's took a picture of each child before they sailed to their new home. This picture of my father was taken by Barnardo's just before he sailed on the SS Melita 2 from London to Quebec City, Canada. He is wearing the Foundling Hospital boy's uniform. | HOME & Links to BHC sites |

It is not recorded why my father came to Canada; whether he chose this or whether there was much discussion. Children
were wards of the Foundling Hospital until they were 21 years old but, at age 14, their education ended and they moved to
positions outside the hospital.
There were few opportunities for children who had grown up in care. Most of the boys went into the Army and the girls to domestic service. My father was blind in one eye. Perhaps this is why he came to Canada rather than joining the army. |

The SS Melita 2 carried my father and other Barnardo children to Canada. | |
| Bibliography of Home Children books, stories of their lives in Canada | Edward landed at Quebec City on Sept 26 1924, and was immediately transported to the Dr. Barnardo
facility at 538 Jarvis Street in Toronto. In October of 1924, he was placed on a farm near Creemore Ontario.
My father was given to the care of Dr. Barnardo until he was 21 years of age. Barnardo's remained in touch with the children who sailed to Canada in their care and visited them periodically to monitor their welfare and progress. Records of the visits were recorded in large ledgers at Barnardo's. A summary of all the written information was sent to me from Barnardo's. |

| Barnardo's puplished a newsletter called "Ups and Downs". This was a newsletter for and about the Barnardo children, past and present; marriages, babies, who was doing what. Several libraries have old copies and people have posted names and events reported in "Ups and Downs" on the internet. I found my father's name in the Dec 1931 edition of "Ups and Downs". He was listed as a person who had donated $5 to Dr. Barnardo's home. I hope that means his experience with Dr. Barnardo's was good. | ||
