Sacraments
Four web sites contain useful information on the sacraments and are especially
worth bookmarking or adding to your favorites list: the Sacraments pages
in The Theology Library
and in Resources for
Catholic Educators both contain extensive lists of excellent sites
on sacraments in general and on individual sacraments. The third site
of note is the The
Nazareth Master Catechism. This Catechism is in fact a compilation
of links to 5 different Catholic Catechism: The Catechetical Instructions
of St. Thomas Aquinas, The Catechism of Trent, The Baltimore
Catechism, The Catechism of Pius X, and the Catechism of
the Catholic Church. One section of the Nazareth Master Catechism
deals specifically with the
sacraments. The fourth resource you might want to explore is a section
of the Catholic Online web site
that presents a summary of the teachings of the Church on the sacraments
in general and on each sacrament specifically. This section can be found
by clicking
here.
The Sacrament of Baptism
Baptisms
Biblical Roots, an article written by by Carolyn Thomas, S.C.N.
and published online by St.
Anthony Messenger Press examines the roots of Baptism as it is celebrated
today in the Gospels, in Acts, in Paul, and in the tradition of the early
Church. This is very readable and it manages in a few pages to provide
indispensable background information that helps deepen ones understanding
of the meaning of Baptism.
The Office of the Catechism of the NCCB/USCC has prepared
a number of quizzes on the different themes of the Catechism of the Catholic
Church. The quiz on Baptism
contains 10 questions with links to the answers. These questions could
be used in an adult education class, RCIA, or as background information
for catechist and religion teachers. How would you answer this question
(the tenth in the quiz)?: True
or false. "Under certain conditions, even non-Christians can baptize
another into the Christian faith."
A good ressource on sacraments is Liturgy
and Sacraments Online Catholic Resources. This Web page offers
dozens of excerpts from Church Fathers, church documents, writings by
Pope John Paul II, and articles by Dr. Marcellino D'Ambrosio.
