BECAUSE OF FAITH
Habakkuk was a minor prophet who lived during the fall of Jerusalem in 586 B.C. He encouraged his fellow Jews to retain their faith during this disaster. He interprets faith as a persistent confidence in God's saving power. Paul cites this passage to defend his theology that a person is justified by his faith and not by religious deeds. Jesus will also insist on the priority of faith in today's Gospel.

INCREASE OUR FAITH
The apostles ask what seems to be a reasonable request, that Jesus enlarge the quantity of their faith. Christ responds that faith is not something that can be measured by size. He illustrates this with a story that seems to have more to do with service than faith. The point seems to be that faith is less an amount of belief than it is a way of living. The true believer goes far beyond mere obligation and seeks total fulfillment of God's designs.
