THE NATIONS

God chose the Jewish people for special blessings. This choice was not an end in itself. God selected them to bring salvation to the whole world. This is the theme of the first reading. Isaiah mentions several foreign lands around the Mediterranean, including Tarshish, which is probably Spain. As Christians we believe that this prophecy was fulfilled in Jesus and his command to "go out to all the world and proclaim the good news."

DISCIPLINE

It's a rough world out there. There is an evil one who would love to see you lose. How can you survive? The answer is found in two words: grace and discipline.
God will never allow you to be tempted beyond the ability to resist–with his help. The help is called "grace".
Equally important is discipline. "The Lord disciplines the people he loves." The army sends people to boot camp to form them into fighters. This discipline could later save their lives and those of their comrades. It teaches them to follow orders and to work together. God's discipline has the same goal.
