Picturing
the Kingdom of God - article by Fr. Brian Cavanaugh, TOR
of Holy Spirit Friary. - "Stories, parables, fables, anecdotes,
illustrations, etc., help us to see the "bigger picture"
in life. They help us to understand there is more to life than
our own limited spheres of experience. They create pictures
in our mind and open up our imagination to comprehend a greater
dimension of life than we are normally used to experiencing.
Stories are vehicles that take us to far off places, places
we've never experienced ourselves."
Storytelling
as Ministry - Another article by Fr. Brian Cavanaugh - "Whenever,
and wherever stories are told--be it through preaching, counseling,
teaching--a chord is plucked within the understanding of the
listeners. Often the story is heard by the ear, but listened
to by the sub-conscious mind where its deeper meaning resides.
"
Network
of Biblical Storytellers (NOBS) - "an international
organization whose mission is to communicate the sacred stories
of the biblical tradition formed nearly twenty years ago by
people searching for ways to experience and hear anew the Word
of God as narrative develops resources for telling biblical
stories through audio, video and computer technologies as well
as telling them face-to-face. "

Leading the Ministry Downloadable: Storytelling - "
The purpose of the document in Acrobat .pdf format is to "review
the art of storytelling and to see storytelling as a very good
teaching technique for catechists."
What
use is storytelling? - "They [the students] didn't
know they were learning anything - it wasn't like a lesson.
But they became better listeners, clearer and more confident
speakers, their memories more retentive and their attitudes
more cooperative."
Storytelling
for Character Development: Why is Storytelling an Effective
Technique to Use? Excerpts from Books That Build Character
by William Kilpatrick and Gregory and Suzanee Wolfe - "
Stories, because of their hold on the imagination, can create
an attachment to goodness. The nature of stories enables us
to "rehearse" moral decisions, strengthening our solidarity
with the good."
Teaching
Stewardship through the Parables - "Jesus taught us
to be good stewards through the stories that He told. In fact,
more than 50% of Our Lord's parables dealt with stewardship
- with how people used time, talent or treasure; with how they
contributed to the community; or with how they reached out to
others." Scroll down the page to see this article.

| The Pearl
Said one oyster to a neighboring oyster, "I have
a very great pain within me. It is heavy and round and I
am in distress."
And the other oyster replied with haughty complacence,
"Praise be to the heavens and to the sea, I have no
pain within me. I am well and whole both within and without."
At that moment a crab was passing by and heard the two
oysters, and he said to the one who was well and whole both
within and without, "Yes, you are well and whole; but
the pain that your neighbor bears is a pearl of exceeding
beauty." -- Khalil Gibran

I recently had the pleasure of listening to a CD by Anna
Moo™. The title of the CD is Holy
Cow, and I found it absolutely delightful. The songs are
bubbling with laughter and sheer fun, they are filled with a special
gentleness - "Blessed are the peacemakers..." comes
to mind - and the music is great!
Anna Moo™ is an award winning songwriter, recording artist
and entertainer for children and families. Her own two children
were the inspiration for her becoming a songwriter for children.
Anna Moo™ tours each year performing for thousands of children
and families at festivals, schools, libraries, and concert halls
across the nation. Moo is also in demand as a keynote and workshop
presenter for national teacher conferences. Her presentations
are dynamic, comical and inspirational. Click
here for more information.
In a letter that Anna sent to me, she wrote: "As an entertainer
(who happens to be a Christian), I wanted to create a body of
music that I could share with children (and families) that allowed
me to celebrate my faith without offending those of other faiths
and religions. There are no specific religious references on Holy
Cow, but I am sure you will find many of the songs biblically
inspired and representative of Christian theology."
|

I cannot but agree with Anna: her theology is very solid and
there is a depth and maturity to her faith that shines through
her lyrics.
I highly recommend you take a bit of time to find out more about
Anna and the wonderful work she does. She has a web site: Anna
Moo! Good Moo's Productions. You can listen to clips
of several of her songs on her web site. A complete discography
is also available.

Religious Education Teacher: Kevin, can you tell me
what we must do before we can expect forgiveness of sin?
Kevin: Uh, I guess we have to sin.

“That’s Not Fair!” is a curriculum
designed to help students (6th grade and up) understand the main
themes of Catholic Social Teaching. The program, having been endorsed
by Bishop Raymond Boland, Bishop of Kansas City-St. Joseph Diocese,
includes activities and materials to help students gain a realistic
understanding of the poor. The final outcome of “That’s
Not Fair!” is to involve students in advocacy on behalf
of people who are less fortunate, or who cannot speak on their
own behalf.
